Dublin’s MELTS announce the release of their second album ‘Field Theory’ (pre-order here) and share lead single and album-opener ‘Figment’. Recorded live to tape in Black Mountain Studios in summer 2023 and produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox, the album is set for release April 12th via cult indie label Fuzz Club (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Jesus And Mary Chain). MELTS are also today announcing UK/EU April tour-dates in support, including a show at London’s Moth Club on April 30.

While their debut album, 2022’s ‘Maelstrom’, dealt with forces on a larger scale affecting a whole city, ‘Field Theory’ explores connections on a smaller, interpersonal scale. The title takes the scientific term ‘Field Theory’, which describes how forces interact and influence particles around them, and applies it to the interactions between people, to the space between all of us, how people interact and affect others around
them. Expanding on the album’s themes, MELTS explained: “Like gravity we are drawn to and miss people and like light waves we love people and are loved. We live in orbits of each other, drawn by unseen forces. The album explores these forces, how we relate to each other,
the people we live with and the people we live without. At the heart of Field Theory lies the realisation that we inhabit each other’s worlds as much as our own, through a field of wide-ranging forces, as important as the ones keeping the planets in place.”

On ‘Figment’ – which kicks things off in a blaze of bulldozing motorik electronics, blown-out MBV-esque guitars, primal percussion and Eoin Kenny’s commanding vocals – they say: “Figment is about the relationship we have with the world around us, filtered through our own imagination, shaped and coloured by how the individual see’s the world. The difference between the concrete and imagined. The video for
Figment was shot by Irish filmmaker Andy Parkes and explores similar themes as the song – how the mind perceives the world subjectively based on key elements: time, emotion and distance from the person or event.”

Comprising of Robbie Brady, Hugh O’Reilly, Gaz Earle, and Eoin Kenny, MELTS spent 2022/2023 touring their celebrated debut ‘Maelstrom’ across Europe, the UK, the US and Ireland, including festival appearances at Wide Awake and SXSW. Outside of their own headline dates, they have also toured with Fontaines D.C. and supported Gilla Band and Public Image Ltd. Along the way they have been praised by the likes of NME, Dork, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan and Paste, alongside gaining widespread airplay on BBC 6 Music.

Produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox, MELTS’ ‘Figment’ is out now via Fuzz Club and available on all digital platforms.
