9th May marks the day that folk singer-songwriter Ben Brown hits our place, so we wanted to have a catch-up and meet ‘im…
Hey Ben! In May, you’re embarking on a 4 date tour across England with a stop at our place along the way. Your first headline tour! Anywhere in particular you’re excited to revisit or anywhere you’ve never gigged before that you’re looking forward to visiting?
As It’s ‘My First Headline Tour!’ I have coughed up a bit of cash to be driven to each of the gigs. Grant at ‘Miami Limos’ in Chelmsford has provided a reasonable looking vehicle at a competitive price point, and I’m thankful for that. Having that time to relax, light a scented candle and stick on a Spotify playlist will get me in that ‘headliner’ mindset.
Last year, you released your debut EP called Blue. After entering the live scene, how did you find it dropping your first release?
It’s been exciting but unexpectedly exhausting! I’m under strict instruction from my GP to wear wrist support at all times between performances. No exceptions! Signing autographs is physically demanding, and can take an unexpected psychological toll when your own name begins to look like a meaningless squiggle.
You’re obviously making a bit of a name for yourself on the folk scene with support slots under your belt from Frank Turner, Skinny Lister, The Meffs and Pet Needs. I assume these are the kind of artists/bands you take inspiration from. Any other names you care to throw in the ring as non-negotiable icons?
It was an immense pleasure to support these guys. Being given the opportunity to step up onto bigger stages and perform to larger crowds is a priceless learning experience. These acts are immensely hard working and generous with their time. Seeing them in action was a source of great inspiration. At every venue there is a special room for the headline act. You can be getting on like a house on fire but as conversation moves towards the door of that room, you need to start putting it on ice. On the Frank Turner tour, I absentmindedly followed the band into the room mid-convo and Archer, the sax player, threw chalk dust in my eye and pushed me back out. In Ireland, the bass player of The Meffs smashed up an Xbox 360 after losing an online game of Fifa to the keyboard player of Pet Needs. My backstage area is going to be Radio 3, scented candles, various religious texts. All are welcome.
Once you’ve finished your tour, what next? I believe you’re treating us to festival appearances over the summer? Any other plans you can tease for us?
My brother Tom has taken over The Royal Oak pub in East Bergholt. I had a word with a local tree surgeon and managed to get him a load of
‘problematic’ logs delivered. They are currently causing a scene in the pub carpark. Once I’ve sorted that mess out, I will be releasing new music. Performing secret headline slots at around midday at a handful of the UK’s leading music festivals. Rumour has it that I’ll be back out on an extensive tour in September – capturing the hearts and minds of the United Kingdom. Depending on how Grant (Miami Limos) performs on this headline tour in May, and if budgets allow, I intend on hiring another Limousine.
What’s your dream rider? Go wild. No budget!
DAB Radio, Yankee Candle selection box, various religious texts. Masseuse. Sparkling water.
Ben Brown plays at The Bodega on 9th May, with support from Dan Ottewell, Brad Dear and George Gadd. Tickets are on sale here.
