Meet ‘Em – Bored Marsh

Rightly one of our city’s finest new indie-rock prospects, Bored Marsh have a Bodega headline next in their sights. Labelled by the good folk at Leftlion as ‘haunting vocals, bomb shelter bass and the steadiest of rock steady drumming’, we’re in good company. Let’s meet ’em…

Ey up Bored Marsh! Set the scene for us, who are we chatting to and where are you right now?

Easy! This is Brad, guitarist in Bored Marsh. Right now I’m sitting outside in the garden because it’s been really hot today and I’ve been stuck on trains all day, which was pretty awful! We’re in a great place as a band and we’ve got quite a few things coming up so the next few months are going to be quite exciting I reckon.

Feels like we should start at Splendour! Loved having you guys on the Bodega stage, how was the weekend for you all? Manage to catch any bands in between the rain?

Yeah, great to be asked to play and we enjoyed it too. Joe and I had been to see Oasis the night before, but we got up and rushed back for it. We had a top weekend of musical entertainment, as it should be! The rain was quite on and off that day but Joe caught a bit of Sophie Ellis-Bextor I think, and I caught a bit of Commons. I really wanted to stick around for Echo & The Bunnymen as I love them, but with the weather being as it was and not feeling the best from my previous nights entertainment I couldn’t make it out that long! Next year we’re going to try to get out and play more festivals to try to broaden our reach.

Nottingham clearly runs through the fabric of the band very deeply. What are your other favourite moments gigging in the city?

Over the years, all of us have been in various different bands so there’s quite a lot of memories between us. I think we’ve always felt it’s quite important to keep the Nottingham vibes – there’s a lot of inspiration from that in what we do. As a band, we’ve had some really good shows and playing to a packed Rescue Rooms at Beat the Streets last year was a highlight. Personally, I really like it when we put our own shows on and we can go that bit further and make the night unique so selling-out our headline show at Rough Trade last September for our EP launch was also great.

You released your long-awaited debut EP ‘Idiot’ last year, congrats! How was the process of writing and putting that together? Is the writing a collaborative experience between all 4 of you?

Thanks! We were all really pleased with how it came out but we now have a new EP, which will be out in November this year, and I think it has elevated our sound even further. The main basis of the songs probably start with me bringing the ideas to the others but it’s definitely a collaboration from there and that’s what makes us sound like we do. I think we’ve all got really used to how we all work now so we’re naturally pushing each other further. None of us are afraid to improve what each other is doing to make the final thing what it is.

The November show is your first time headlining with us, what can we expect? Any new tunes getting a run out?

We try to make our shows an event and we’ll try to do things that we believe make us stand out. We’ll definitely try to get a charity on board to give them some exposure, we’ve enjoyed doing that at previous shows. We’ve got a couple of new tunes going at the moment and we’ll see if we can get them ready. We will have released new music by that point with our new EP, which will be called ‘DoGooder’ and will be available on all the regular streaming platforms. For the first time we will also have our music available on vinyl and this gig will be in celebration of the release of that.

Sounds ace! We need help with our playlists, what other Notts artists should we be checking out?

My personal current fave Notts band are TR>NKS. I love those guys. Older Notts bands I’ve been into were The Kull and Lords but they’re long gone now! We have Mandibles and Swallowtail supporting us at The Bodega and we’re really digging those guys and then there are a couple of new bands; Ideal Host and Stereopium who I would recommend too.

Finally before we let you go, money is no object – what’s your dream rider requests?

For me it would be a bottomless amount of Pizza and German Helles. That Detroit Pizza from Slice ‘n’ Brew is next level so if that could be arranged, that would be great!

Bored Marsh headline The Bodega on Saturday 29th November. Tickets are on sale now
