Meet ‘Em – Toby Sebastian

Talented singer-songwriter (and Game of Thrones actor) Toby Sebastian draws on sounds of the late 60s and early 70s, and brings his debut album to Notts on 26th March so we had a chat all things music!

Hey Toby, welcome to The Bodega! How are you feeling ahead of the show?

Thank you for having me! I’m currently in the studio in Bethnal Green finishing up my upcoming album. I’m buzzing to play. I’ve heard a lot of great things of Nottingham and I also have family coming from Derby. It is my first time here so it’ll be great to see some new faces in the crowd

Your latest single ‘Too Good’ is sounding huge, what was the writing and recording process for that like?

Well Too Good was written several years ago. I’d just finished my first acting job which was a film in Indonesia. There were beautiful actors everywhere and I felt completely out of place. I wrote this song about that summer of 2011 and what it was like dealing with the competition and running around wide eyed at 19.

Growing up in Spain, how do you think that impacted your musical taste and perhaps the things you draw inspiration from?

I lived in a Spain for around 4 years. It’s where I started learning the guitar. The only guitar lessons available where we were, were with a flamenco player. Although I wasn’t taught flamenco, starting on a flamenco guitar and without a plectrum really moulded my style. All of my memories from that time involved music blasting through the house by my parents. Here There and Everywhere was the first song I ever sang live. Listening to Revolver really takes me back to that time.

We’ve seen you say recently that one of your earliest songs from 2019 seems to be getting a larger reaction show-by-show these days. How does it feel to breathe new life into old songs with your biggest tour yet?

When I hear people sing my songs at shows, it really is one of the greatest feelings. It’s always a lovely surprise when it happens with old songs.. it’s a reminder that the songs are still alive.

Can we expect to hear some new material on the tour?

Absolutely. Most of the set on tour will be my new album as it’s coming out next year. I’ve played a couple tracks from the album at my last few shows but this will have the majority of them for sure

Lastly, if budget wasn’t a problem what would be your dream rider?

Clase Azul tequila would be my dream rider!

Tickets on sale for Toby Sebastian’s show on the 26th March available here.
